Police Arrest Three Suspects Over Killing of Mother, Six Children in Kano
The Kano State Police Command has arrested three suspects in connection with the killing of a woman and her six children in Dorayi Charanchi Quarters, Kano metropolis.
The arrests were confirmed on Sunday by the state police spokesperson, Haruna Kiyawa, a superintendent of police. He said the operation was carried out on the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and supervised by the Commissioner of Police in Kano State, Ibrahim Bakori.
The attack occurred on Saturday at about 12:10 p.m. when assailants entered the residence of Haruna Bashir and killed seven members of the household.
Mr Kiyawa said intelligence-led investigations led to the arrest of the suspects during a targeted operation conducted between 10:00 p.m. on Friday, 17 January, and 4:00 a.m. on Saturday, 18 January.
The suspects were identified as Umar Auwalu, 23, of Sabuwar Gandu Quarters; Isyaku Yakubu, also known as Chebe, 40, of Sagagi Quarters; and Yakubu Abdulaziz, also known as Wawo, 21, of Sabon Gida Sharada Quarters.
According to the police, Umar Auwalu is a nephew of the deceased woman. Investigators said he confessed to leading the attack and admitted that the same group was responsible for the killing and burning of two housewives in Tudun Yola Quarters in November 2025.
During the arrests, police recovered four blood-stained clothes, two mobile phones belonging to the victims, a cutlass, a club, and an undisclosed amount of cash allegedly stolen from the house.
Mr Kiyawa said investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of the suspects’ activities and identify any additional accomplices.
He assured residents that the command remains committed to bringing those responsible for violent crimes to justice and urged the public to continue cooperating with law enforcement authorities.
