PDP NEC Meeting Faces Storm as Ex-Minister Chidoka Warns of Impending Disaster

In anticipation of the forthcoming Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting slated for Thursday, tensions escalate as former Minister of Aviation, Osita Chidoka, issues a stark warning regarding the fate of the party.

Chidoka, in a statement released on Wednesday night, cautioned PDP governors and the National Assembly Caucus that decisions made during the NEC meeting could have profound repercussions, potentially leading to the demise of the party.

The focus of the NEC meeting, scheduled for later today, revolves around the fate of the current acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum. Damagum assumed the role following the indefinite suspension of Iyorchia Ayu by a court in Benue State in March 2023.

The debate centers on whether Damagum should continue as the substantive chairman or if a member from the North Central region, as stipulated by the party’s constitution, should be elected to complete Ayu’s tenure.

While some party stakeholders advocate for Damagum’s endorsement, citing his interim leadership and stability, others insist on upholding the constitutional mandate for regional representation.

Chidoka’s warning underscores the gravity of the situation, emphasizing the need for the party to adhere to its constitution and principles. He asserts that any deviation from constitutional norms could spell disaster for the PDP, potentially leading to its downfall.

Expressing concern over the party’s current trajectory, Chidoka calls for a return to the core values of good governance and principled opposition. He warns that failure to navigate away from looming challenges could have dire consequences for the party’s future.

The urgency of the situation, according to Chidoka, lies in the imperative to preserve the legacy of the party, which played a pivotal role in ushering and stabilizing democracy in Nigeria. As the NEC meeting looms, all eyes are on the PDP leadership to navigate through turbulent waters and steer the party towards a path of renewal and resilience.
