PDP: Lagos Won’t Serve Father, Son; Rejects Seyi Tinubu’s Governorship Bid

The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has firmly opposed any plans to impose Seyi Tinubu, the son of President Bola Tinubu, as the next governor of the state. This reaction follows recent endorsements from several groups who have suggested Seyi as a potential candidate for the governorship race in 2027.

The Coalition of Nigerian Youth Leaders, in a statement made on Tuesday in Owerri, Imo State, proposed that Seyi should consider running for governor in Osun or Imo states, where his family has ties. Meanwhile, the Friends of Seyi Tinubu, a socio-political group, also endorsed him, praising his intellectual abilities and leadership qualities.

However, these endorsements have sparked backlash from several quarters. In an interview with Sunday PUNCH, Hakeem Amode, the Lagos PDP spokesperson, rejected the idea, emphasizing that Lagos should not be treated as a dynastic prize. He argued that governorship positions should not be inherited and questioned the appropriateness of a son succeeding his father. He warned that any attempt to impose such a candidacy would face strong resistance, especially considering the fact that many Lagosians did not vote for Tinubu in the last presidential election.

The Coalition of Lagos Indigenous Youths also condemned the suggestion, arguing that non-indigenes should not be permitted to govern Lagos.

On the other hand, the spokesperson for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos, Seye Oladejo, dismissed the discussions about the 2027 elections as premature. He urged residents to focus on supporting the current government to further development, rather than speculating about future elections.

Prominent APC chieftain Joe Igbokwe also weighed in, criticizing the endorsements as distractions, suggesting that the real goal was to undermine President Tinubu. He dismissed the idea of Seyi Tinubu running for governor, stating that governing Lagos was not a role for amateurs.
