Pakistani Politician Surrenders Victory, Says Election was Rigged in His Favour

Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman, a politician from the Jamaat-e-Islami party in Pakistan, has voluntarily relinquished his recently won provincial assembly seat PS-129 in Karachi, claiming that the election was rigged in his favor.

Rehman, initially declared the victor with over 26,000 votes, revealed that discrepancies emerged when comparing individual polling station records. He alleged that votes cast for Saif Bari, an independent candidate backed by Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, were manipulated, diminishing from 31,000 to 11,000.

Imran Khan, a former prime minister currently incarcerated on corruption and criminal charges, faced restrictions on his party’s participation in elections, compelling members to run as independents.

During a press conference held by the Jamaat-e-Islami party, Rehman emphasized the importance of respecting public opinion and denounced any attempts to secure victory through illegitimate means. He stated, “If anyone wants to make us win in an illegitimate manner, we will not be accepting that. Public opinion should be respected, let the winner win, let the loser lose, no one should get anything extra.”

While electoral authorities in Pakistan have refuted Rehman’s allegations, the situation remains uncertain regarding who will fill the PS-129 seat. The controversy adds another layer to the complex political landscape in the aftermath of Pakistan’s national elections.
