Outrage in Owerri as Taskforce Vehicle Kills Motorcyclist and Passenger
Tears and anger filled the air in Owerri, Imo State, on Monday after a vehicle driven by operatives of a state taskforce reportedly crushed a motorcyclist and his passenger to death near Akachi Road.
Eyewitnesses said the taskforce members had earlier impounded a vehicle for an alleged traffic violation. Some operatives then entered the seized vehicle and sped off recklessly, hitting a moving motorcycle and killing the rider and his passenger instantly.
The horrific crash drew a large crowd of distraught residents who gathered around the mangled motorcycle and the lifeless bodies. Witnesses said the taskforce operatives fled immediately after the incident, leaving the victims on the road.
The tragedy sparked outrage across the area, with residents accusing the taskforce of brutality and recklessness. Many demanded that the Imo State Government disband the unit, citing repeated cases of abuse.
“This is heartbreaking. The government must take action before more lives are lost,” said a trader who witnessed the incident.
Just two weeks earlier, the same taskforce was reported to have clashed with traders at Toronto Junction, Owerri, in an encounter that allegedly claimed several lives.
As of the time of this report, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Henry Okoye, had yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
