Outrage in Northern Nigeria Over Rising Targeted Attacks on Traditional Rulers

The increasing frequency of kidnappings and murders of traditional rulers in Northern Nigeria has sparked deep concern among the region’s elders. The Northern Elders’ Forum (NEF) has strongly condemned the recent abduction and killing of Alhaji Isa Bawa, the Emir of Gobir in Sokoto State, labeling the incident as both a profound loss and a grave attack on the cultural and social fabric of the region.

In a statement released by NEF spokesperson Abdulazeez Suleiman, the forum decried the murder as a stark reflection of the growing insecurity plaguing Northern Nigeria. “This heinous act by bandits not only violates the sanctity of our traditional institutions but also represents a broader breakdown in law and order,” Suleiman stated.

The NEF emphasized that the killing of the Emir signifies more than just the loss of a prominent leader—it is an affront to the heritage and authority that traditional rulers represent in Northern society. The forum called for immediate and decisive action from government authorities and security agencies to apprehend those responsible, warning that failure to do so would only embolden such criminal elements.

The murder has elicited widespread outrage across Northern Nigeria, with leaders and citizens alike mourning the loss. President Bola Tinubu, in a statement through his spokesperson Ajuri Ngelale, condemned the attack as deeply disturbing and vowed that the perpetrators would face justice. Tinubu extended his condolences to the Emir’s family and the people of Sokoto State, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to combating terrorism.

Similarly, Speaker of the House of Representatives Hon. Abbas Tajudeen expressed his sorrow over the incident, condemning the ongoing spate of kidnappings as unacceptable. He called for stronger measures to curb the rising tide of banditry that has left many communities in despair.

Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu, along with Senators Aliyu Wamakko and Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, also expressed their grief and anger over the killing. In separate statements, they described the murder as a barbaric and cowardly act, calling for swift justice to be served. Governor Aliyu urged citizens to support security efforts by providing relevant information to authorities, while Senator Wamakko stressed that the incident must not go unpunished.

The tragedy has further inflamed tensions in Sokoto State, with youths in Gatawa, the late Emir’s hometown, staging protests against what they perceive as the government’s failure to secure the monarch’s release. The protesters accused local political leaders of neglecting their responsibilities, a sentiment echoed in the days leading up to the Emir’s death when he made a public plea for help in a video released by his abductors.

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) also weighed in, condemning the murder and calling for a thorough investigation into the incident. The ACF reiterated its call for an overhaul of Nigeria’s security architecture, emphasizing the need for more effective measures to combat the escalating violence in the North.

The NEF, along with other Northern leaders, has called for a comprehensive reevaluation of the security strategies in place, urging policymakers to address the root causes of insecurity, including poverty and poor governance. They stressed that a holistic approach, involving community engagement and economic development, is necessary to restore peace and stability to the region.
