Opposition Lawmakers Joining APC Out of Patriotism and Support for Tinubu – Akpabio
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has attributed the recent defections of opposition lawmakers to the All Progressives Congress (APC) to patriotism and confidence in President Bola Tinubu’s leadership.
Akpabio made the remarks on Wednesday night after accompanying Senator Agom Jarigbe (Cross River North) and Senator Kaila Samaila (Bauchi North) to a meeting with President Tinubu at the State House in Abuja. Both senators recently left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the ruling APC.
Speaking to State House correspondents after the meeting, Akpabio said the lawmakers’ decision was influenced by the President’s economic reforms and dedication to national development.
“They are Mr. President’s children and supporters. The President is the father of the nation and of all political parties,” Akpabio said.
He added that although the senators were elected under different political platforms, Tinubu’s transformative policies motivated them to join the APC to contribute to nation-building.
“But interestingly, they joined the Senate on different platforms. However, because of Mr. President’s policies that have boosted the economy and national revenue, they found it appropriate to come and help build Nigeria,” he stated.
Akpabio emphasized, “Their move is purely patriotic. They are not focused on which party is in power but on who can govern Nigeria effectively, improve the country, and ensure food security for Nigerians.”
Senator Jarigbe also spoke about his defection, saying his decision was driven by his belief that President Tinubu is performing commendably.
“I joined the APC because the President is doing well, and I want to support him in delivering the dividends of democracy to our people,” Jarigbe said, describing his move as a clear demonstration of support for Tinubu’s policies aimed at repositioning the country.
