Okwukwu Emerges Ohanaeze N’digbo President General
Dim Uche Nnam Okwukwu, a prominent activist lawyer, has been elected President General of Ohanaeze N’digbo Worldwide at the organization’s convention in Port Harcourt. According to a statement by the returning officer, Dr. Achi Achi, Okwukwu was returned unopposed during the convention, which began on Thursday and will conclude on Friday. The election was characterized as a progressive movement within Igboland, with national delegates from across the region converging in Port Harcourt to participate.
In his acceptance speech, Okwukwu expressed gratitude to the delegates for entrusting him with the responsibility of leading the Igbo race during what he described as a critical time in their history. He pledged to uphold the constitution of Ohanaeze N’digbo and to protect the interests of Igbos globally. Among his priorities, he emphasized engaging the Federal Government to secure the unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), and other political prisoners. He also highlighted the importance of uniting the Igbo people, addressing longstanding grievances, and advocating for the restructuring of Nigeria.
Okwukwu outlined an ambitious agenda, including engaging governments and stakeholders to address the challenges facing the Igbo nation. He promised to advocate for the modernization and dredging of the Port Harcourt coastal ports and the Azumini to Opobo Imo River basin to drive industrialization in the region. Additionally, he committed to pursuing the creation of Anioma State and other states to ensure equitable representation for the Igbo people.
On the issue of restructuring, Okwukwu said he would mobilize the Igbo and work with stakeholders to ensure the unity and progress of the Igbo nation. He also pledged to incorporate Igbo communities in Benue, Edo, and other areas into the Ohanaeze family, modernize the Igbo language for global relevance, and engage with the Federal and State governments to address the concerns of agitators and political exiles.
Okwukwu was described as the consensus candidate among more than four aspirants, earning support as an independent figure capable of leading the socio-cultural organization. The election, attended by delegates from the South-East and the diaspora, drew over 200 social and cultural groups, marking it as a historic event for the Igbo community.
