Okuama Indigenes Sue DSS, Army for N200m Over Unlawful Arrest, Detention

Two leaders of the Okuama community in Ughelli South, Delta State, James Oghorokor and Dennis Okugbaye, have filed separate fundamental rights suits against the Nigerian Army and State Security Services (SSS) at the Federal High Court in Warri. The suits, filed by their counsel, Malcolm Omirhobo Esq, Akpokona Omafuaire Esq, and others, are demanding N200 million in damages for their unlawful arrest and detention.

The plaintiffs, who were among six community leaders arrested by military officials between August 18 and 20, are challenging their detention without trial or access to their counsel. They are seeking a declaration that their arrest and detention violate their fundamental rights to personal liberty, private and family life, dignity, and freedom of movement.

The court is being asked to compel the respondents to release the applicants unconditionally and to restrain them from further violating their fundamental human rights. The plaintiffs are also seeking N100 million in damages each for the violations of their rights.

This development comes as the whereabouts of the six community leaders remain unknown, sparking concerns about their safety and well-being. The case is expected to shed light on the circumstances surrounding their arrest and detention.
