NYSC member dies from abortion complication, police launch probe
Police have opened an investigation into the death of a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member in Ogun State following reports that she suffered complications after a suspected abortion procedure.
Victoria Ariyo, who was serving in Abeokuta South Local Government Area, reportedly died on Tuesday after the medical incident. Sources said she developed complications shortly after the procedure and could not be revived.
Her remains have been buried at the Kobape cemetery along the Kobape–Sagamu road in Abeokuta.
A local government inspector attached to the NYSC in Abeokuta South, Abass Olalekan, has reportedly been taken into custody in connection with the case. Details surrounding his alleged involvement have not been officially confirmed by authorities.
The spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command confirmed that Ariyo’s death is under investigation but declined to comment on the reported arrest.
The NYSC in Ogun State has also not issued a formal statement, with its spokesperson saying he was not aware of the incident at the time of enquiry.
The case comes weeks after another corps member serving in the same local government area reportedly died under unclear circumstances, raising concerns within the community.
Police authorities say inquiries are ongoing to determine the exact cause of death and any possible culpability.
