NNPCL, Dangote Refinery Trade Words Over Alleged Substandard Fuel
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and Dangote Refinery have found themselves in a public dispute following allegations of substandard fuel. The controversy stems from a viral video that questions the quality and efficiency of petrol purchased from an NNPCL filling station.
A content creator recently shared a video online, claiming to have conducted a comparison test between petrol from an NNPCL filling station in Ojodu Berger and fuel from Dangote Refinery, purchased at an MRS Filling Station in Alapere, Lagos. According to the video, a litre of Dangote petrol, priced at N925, lasted 33 minutes in a generator, while a litre of NNPCL petrol, bought at N945, lasted only 17 minutes. The footage quickly gained traction, with many Nigerians sharing their own experiences with fuel from both suppliers.
NNPCL swiftly denied the allegations, dismissing the claims as misleading and unfounded. In a statement issued by its spokesperson, Olufemi Soneye, the corporation described the video as “unverified and amateur research lacking credibility, accuracy, and professional oversight.”
“The NNPC Ltd strongly refutes the false and misleading allegations made in a viral video circulating online, which claims that NNPC fuel does not last. This assertion is baseless and entirely unfounded,” the statement read.
NNPCL emphasized that a substantial portion of its Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) in Lagos originates from Dangote Refinery, which it described as a strategic partner committed to high industry standards. The company assured consumers that its fuel undergoes rigorous testing to ensure optimal efficiency, durability, and environmental sustainability.
NNPCL also warned against what it called deliberate misinformation designed to tarnish its reputation. “We will not tolerate deliberate misinformation designed to undermine our operations and mislead Nigerians. Henceforth, NNPC Ltd will take firm legal action against individuals or groups who intentionally spread falsehoods about our brand and operations,” the statement concluded.
Officials at Dangote Refinery have expressed surprise at NNPCL’s response, questioning why the corporation chose to drag their refinery into the issue. Speaking anonymously to *Sunday PUNCH*, a Dangote Refinery representative argued that not all fuel sold at NNPCL stations is sourced from their refinery.
“It was reported that our PMS burn rate is better than any other, and everyone has been talking about it for months. So why is NNPCL now stylishly dragging Dangote into this issue?” one official asked.
Another source suggested that NNPCL might be attempting to involve the Dangote Refinery in an unnecessary controversy. “NNPCL has been importing fuel. Have they come out to deny that? They also have their own refineries. We don’t sell substandard fuel, and Nigerians know that,” the official stated.
This dispute highlights the ongoing challenges in Nigeria’s petroleum sector, including concerns over fuel quality, pricing, and transparency in supply chains. As both NNPCL and Dangote Refinery stand firm on their positions, consumers remain caught in the middle, seeking clarity on fuel quality and efficiency.
For now, industry observers await further developments, especially as NNPCL threatens legal action against misinformation. Meanwhile, Nigerians continue to share their experiences, fueling the debate over which supplier provides the best quality petrol.
