NNPCL Cleaner Dies on Duty in Rivers; Family Demands Investigation

Asher Christopher, a 23-year-old contract cleaner with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), tragically died on duty in Rivers State. The incident occurred on Tuesday when Christopher reportedly fell from a five-storey building while performing his duties.

The circumstances surrounding Christopher’s death remain unclear. His family has expressed grave concerns and is calling for a comprehensive investigation. Christopher’s father, Christopher Dan, recounted his distressing experience, noting that he was initially informed of the incident by a colleague of his son. Despite his attempts to get clear information from the police, he faced considerable delays and confusion. Dan was eventually taken to the NNPC offices but was unable to verify the exact location from which his son fell. He also expressed skepticism about the condition of the site and the official account of the incident.

Grace Iringe-Koko, Public Relations Officer of the Rivers State Police Command, confirmed the incident, stating that it has been reported to the Old GRA Police Division and that an investigation is underway.

Prince Wiro, National Coordinator of the Centre for Basic Rights Protection and Accountability Campaign, has called for a thorough investigation into the incident. Wiro questioned why the case was not reported to the Central Police Station, which oversees the jurisdiction, urging authorities to clarify the circumstances surrounding Christopher’s death.
