NNPC Undergoes Major Shake-Up as Bayo Ojulari Sacks Over 200 Officials
In a sweeping restructuring effort at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC), newly appointed Group CEO Bayo Ojulari has dismissed more than 200 officials, including top executives such as Bala Wunti, former head of NAPIMS, and Lawal Sade, the chief compliance officer. Ibrahim Onoja, managing director of the Port Harcourt Refinery, was also relieved of his duties. The move marks Mr Ojulari’s first major decision since taking over the reins of the state-run oil company on April 4, following his appointment by President Bola Tinubu.
Sources within the company said the shake-up, which many employees reportedly welcomed, could open up greater opportunities for women and minority groups within the organisation. One senior official, speaking anonymously, noted that the restructuring would “enhance female representation in leadership positions.” In line with this goal, Mr Ojulari appointed Maryamu Idris as the new managing director of trading, where she will oversee crude oil transactions, replacing Lawal Sade. Obioma Abangwu was named chief liaison officer to the NNPC management board.
Although the company has yet to issue an official statement, the developments reflect a significant shift in leadership strategy under Mr Ojulari, a former Shell executive. His predecessor, Mele Kyari, led the company for five years before his removal earlier this month.
