Nnewi Diocese Reacts to Claims of Christianity Renunciation by Catholic Knight
The Catholic Diocese of Nnewi has dismissed reports suggesting that a member of the Knights of St. John International renounced Christianity following an incident at the dedication of the Our Lady of Assumption Cathedral, Nnewi, Anambra State.
The reports followed events at the cathedral’s dedication Mass held on Wednesday, January 14, presided over by Cardinal Francis Arinze. During the ceremony, the Catholic Bishop of Nnewi Diocese, Most Rev. Jonas-Benson Okoye, acknowledged individuals and groups who contributed to the completion of the cathedral.
Sir Louis-James Ebube Anaedo, a Catholic Knight and member of the Knights of St. John International (KSJI), was reported to have expressed dissatisfaction during the programme over what he considered inadequate recognition of the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah’s contributions to the cathedral project. Eyewitnesses said Sir Anaedo became visibly upset and later left the church, a development that drew attention both within the congregation and on social media.
Sir Anaedo reportedly argued that Senator Ubah played a significant role in the early stages of the cathedral’s construction and deserved broader recognition. He suggested options such as a moment of silence, formal acknowledgement of the senator’s family, or other measures to memorialise his contributions.
Reacting to the incident, the Director of Communications of the Catholic Diocese of Nnewi, Rev. Fr. Martins Onwudiwe, clarified that the diocese did recognise the late senator’s contributions during the dedication programme. He explained that the diocesan bishop publicly acknowledged and appreciated Senator Ubah’s role, noting that views on the form and extent of recognition often differ.
Rev. Fr. Onwudiwe stressed that the Church remains focused on pastoral responsibility, reconciliation and dialogue when concerns are raised by members.
“The Church is concerned about every member. When issues arise, the focus is dialogue, reconciliation and spiritual care,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Knights of St. John International have also responded to the development. The Worthy President of Commandery 511, Nnewi, Noble C.Y. Egbosi, confirmed that a panel has been constituted, following directives from the Supreme Subordinate, to review the conduct of the member.
He said the outcome of the panel’s review would determine the next steps to be taken by the order.
