Nnamdi Kanu Files ₦60 Billion Defamation Lawsuit Against Reno Omokri

Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has filed a ₦60 billion defamation lawsuit against former presidential aide, Reno Omokri. The suit, filed at the High Court of Enugu State, accuses Omokri of making false and malicious statements that have severely damaged Kanu’s reputation and caused emotional distress.

According to court documents, Kanu is seeking ₦50 billion in general damages and an additional ₦10 billion in aggravated damages. His legal team alleges that Omokri’s comments, particularly those published on social media platforms, were not only defamatory but were made recklessly and with disregard for the truth. Kanu also claims the statements have prejudiced his ongoing legal proceedings, including terrorism-related charges he faces at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

In addition to monetary compensation, Kanu is asking the court to order Omokri to publicly retract the alleged defamatory remarks through national newspapers and on his social media account within seven days of the judgment. He also seeks a public apology and a perpetual injunction restraining Omokri from making similar statements in the future. The lawsuit further demands that Omokri pay the legal costs and 10 percent annual interest on the awarded sum from the date of judgment until full payment.

Kanu’s lead counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, confirmed the legal action in a post on X (formerly Twitter), describing the move as a necessary step to protect his client’s dignity and reputation. Omokri, who is known for his vocal political commentary, has yet to issue a formal response to the lawsuit.
