Nnamdi Azikiwe University Suspends All Medical Staff Following Student’s Death
Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) has suspended all medical and security personnel on duty after the tragic death of a 100-level law student, Isabella Ajana. The suspension, which lasts for three months, coincides with a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
The Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Carol Arinze-Umobi, announced the suspension in an official statement released Friday night. She emphasized that the action is a precautionary measure aimed at ensuring an unbiased inquiry.
Isabella Ajana, who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, had reportedly been locked out of her hostel room at Elmada Hostel along with her roommates on June 27, 2025. Attempts to secure a spare key were unsuccessful. On July 4, she was rushed to the university’s medical center in critical condition and later passed away under circumstances that have sparked controversy.
The university has established an investigative panel to determine the cause of her death and to assess potential lapses in emergency response and healthcare services on campus.
This incident has raised serious concerns about the adequacy of medical facilities and protocols at the university, highlighting the need for stronger emergency preparedness to protect students’ lives.
UNIZIK has assured the public that the investigation will be conducted thoroughly, and appropriate measures will follow based on the findings.
