NLC Responds to President Tinubu’s Political Jibe
In response to President Bola Tinubu’s recent remarks during the Lagos Red Line Project inauguration, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) asserted its disinterest in political positions, including that of the President. NLC President Joe Ajaero clarified that their primary focus is on ensuring the implementation of agreements reached with the Federal Government post the fuel subsidy removal.
President Tinubu’s suggestion that Labour unions wait until 2027 for electoral participation was met with a firm statement from Ajaero. The NLC emphasized that rather than engaging in political rhetoric, Tinubu should address pressing issues such as widespread hunger, unemployment, housing insecurity, and rising living costs.
Ajaero highlighted key agreements, including wage increases, social welfare programs, and infrastructure development, that remain unimplemented since June 2023. The NLC called for a redirection of efforts towards fulfilling these commitments, emphasizing that their objective is effective governance prioritizing the welfare and security of all Nigerians.
The statement concluded with a call for accountability, urging President Tinubu to show tangible progress on the agreements made with Labour, denouncing divisive language and emphasizing the need for constructive dialogue to address the nation’s challenges. The NLC reaffirmed its commitment to championing the interests of Nigerian workers and the broader populace.
