NLC Defies DSS Criticism, Vows to Proceed with Planned Protest Against Economic Hardships
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has expressed dissatisfaction with the Department of State Services (DSS), following the security agency’s call to abandon a planned protest addressing economic challenges and the escalating cost of living in the country.
Last week, the NLC issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, urging the implementation of agreements and prompt action to address the growing crisis of survival in Nigeria. The proposed nationwide industrial action is scheduled for February 27 and 28.
Peter Afunanya, spokesperson for the DSS, urged dialogue and negotiation, emphasizing the government’s commitment to improving economic conditions at all levels. However, NLC President Joe Ajaero, in a statement on Wednesday evening, insisted that the planned protest would proceed despite the DSS’s advice.
Ajaero expressed concern over the DSS assuming the role of the government’s chief spokesperson and called for the agency’s focus on preventing potential crises during the protest. He stated, “We are equally intrigued by the innuendos of the Service, their philosophy of ‘peace,’ and wild allegations, and we want to reassure them that no one loves this country more than us.”
Rejecting attempts at blackmail, Ajaero affirmed that the protest would remain peaceful, addressing the high cost of living affecting both citizens and unserviced personnel within the DSS. He emphasized, “We cannot fold our hands and pretend all is well. That will be a grievous conspiracy that history will not forgive.”
