Desmims Independent Television (DITV), Nigeria’s first private TV station, and Alheri Radio, the oldest private radio station in Northern Nigeria, have suspended operations due to severe economic challenges.

Idris Mustapha, the acting General Manager and Chairman of the Management Committee, announced the development in a statement issued in Kaduna over the weekend. He cited the escalating cost of power as the primary factor, stating it has become unsustainable to maintain operations under the current economic climate.

According to the statement, many businesses that previously advertised with the station are now unable to fulfill their financial commitments, further straining the station’s revenue generation. This financial pressure, combined with rising operational costs, led to the difficult decision to suspend both DITV and Alheri Radio.

The suspension marks a significant moment in Nigeria’s media landscape, as DITV is recognized as the nation’s first private television station, while Alheri Radio holds a special place as one of the oldest private radio broadcasters, particularly for its loyal Hausa-speaking audience.

The management assured the public that normal operations would resume as soon as the financial situation improves, expressing deep regret for the inconvenience caused to their millions of viewers and listeners.
