Nigeria’s AFCON Semifinal Lineup Revealed: Osimhen Takes Charge as Osayi Steps in for Sanusi
In a crucial Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) semi-final clash against South Africa, coach Jose Peseiro has unveiled his starting XI, maintaining a familiar lineup with a few strategic changes.
Concerns arose about the availability of Zaidu Sanusi and Victor Osimhen after the quarter-final triumph over Angola, but only the latter will be on the pitch against Bafana Bafana this Wednesday evening.
Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, having recovered sufficiently, secures his place in the starting lineup. However, midfielder Yusuf Alhassan will be on the bench for the upcoming match.
Despite calls to include renowned players like Ahmed Musa, Samuel Chukwueze, Terem Moffi, and Kelechi Iheanacho, Peseiro has opted for a lineup that relies on proven performers.
Bright Osayi Samuel assumes the role of right wing-back, with Ola Aina on the opposite flank. The defensive trio comprises William Troost Ekong as captain, Semi Ajayi, and Calvin Bassey.
Osimhen, recovering from an abdominal strain, spearheads the attack alongside Ademola Lookman and Moses Simon. England-based midfield duo Frank Onyeka and Alex Iwobi will maintain their positions in the middle of the park.
The kick-off for the highly anticipated game is set for 6 pm Nigerian time.
