Nigerians to Pay More for Number Plates, Driver’s Licenses from November 1

Starting November 1, 2024, Nigerians will face higher fees for obtaining driver’s licenses and vehicle number plates following the Joint Tax Board’s (JTB) approval of new rates.

This adjustment is part of the JTB’s efforts to enhance the quality and security features of these identification items, aligning them with international standards.

Under the new rates, a three-year motor vehicle driver’s license will now cost N15,000, while the five-year option will be N21,000. Motorcycle and tricycle drivers will also see a rise in costs, with a three-year license now priced at N7,000 and the five-year version at N11,000.

Vehicle number plates will also be more expensive, with the minimum price for standard private and commercial plates set at N30,000. Fancy number plates will now cost N400,000, and motorcycle number plates are priced at N12,000. A dealer motor vehicle number plate will now be available for N100,000.

Government number plates have also been affected by the price hike. A government fancy motor vehicle plate will now cost N120,000, while the standard version is priced at N80,000. Government fancy motorcycle plates are now N50,000, and standard motorcycle plates will cost N20,000.

According to the JTB, these new rates are designed to improve the security features of both driver and vehicle identification processes nationwide.

Olusegun Adesokan, Secretary of the JTB, emphasized the importance of public awareness in the implementation of the new rates. He stated that the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has been tasked with conducting public engagement and sensitization campaigns to ensure a smooth transition to the revised pricing structure.

“The secretariat has requested that the FRSC notify the JTB of its public engagement and sensitization plans,” Adesokan said. “We are confident that a robust engagement strategy will facilitate the seamless implementation of the revised rates as approved by the board.”
