Nigerian Sex Workers’ Union Calls for End to Harassment and Greater Dignity Nationwide
The Nigeria Sex Workers Association (NSWA) has made a strong appeal to law enforcement agencies across the country, urging them to protect its members from harassment, violence, and abuse. This call to action comes amid reports of increasing physical assaults, harassment, and extortion faced by sex workers, both from clients and security officials.
In a statement released on Tuesday in Lagos, the National Coordinator of NSWA, Amaka Enemo, emphasized the need for authorities to recognize the humanity and rights of sex workers. “Sex workers are not criminals but individuals with rights, who deserve the protection of security agencies,” she stated.
Enemo also highlighted the essential role sex workers play in promoting community health, particularly in efforts to curb the spread of sexually transmitted infections such as HIV. Despite their contributions to public health and the economy, sex workers continue to face systemic violence, discrimination, and stigma.
The association has called for comprehensive measures to address these issues, including training programs for law enforcement officers, the establishment of safe mechanisms for reporting abuses, and ensuring accountability for acts of violence and discrimination. Public awareness campaigns aimed at reducing stigma and promoting justice for victims were also highlighted as crucial steps.
The NSWA reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for the rights and safety of its members. It urged government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and the broader public to collaborate in the fight against the injustices faced by sex workers.
