Nigerian Priest Defends Pope Francis’ Stance on Same-Sex Marriage Blessings
Father Ugochukwu Ugwoke, a Nigerian Catholic priest, stands in support of Pope Francis, who granted permission for the blessing of same-sex marriages under specific conditions. The announcement has sparked various reactions, shedding light on the Church’s teachings and creating a debate on social media.
Pope Francis officially approved the blessing of same-sex and “irregular” couples, as reported by Punch Metro on Monday. However, the Vatican clarified that such blessings should not become a regular part of Church rituals or be associated with civil unions or weddings.
Addressing the controversial topic on his Twitter handle, Father Ugochukwu wrote under the title ‘HAS POPE FRANCIS CHANGED THE CHURCH’S TEACHING ABOUT MARRIAGE?’ He acknowledged the sensitivity of the issue, categorizing Church laws into three types.
Father Ugochukwu emphasized that while some laws, such as natural moral laws, remain unchangeable, others fall under the jurisdiction of the Church’s authority. He clarified that Pope Francis can only change laws within the Church’s authority, and highlighted the distinction between blessing same-sex couples and endorsing same-sex marriage.
He stated, “If you think that the blessing of same-sex couples will lead to the eventual endorsement and approval of same-sex marriage by the Catholic Church, I want to tell you that such will never happen without the Church running into the risks of schism. Same-sex marriages are sinful and can never be approved.” However, he pointed out that the Church does not condemn same-sex couples as individuals.
Father Ugochukwu’s comments triggered reactions on social media, with users expressing diverse opinions. Some, like @ugoBuUgo, focused on the Church not condemning same-sex couples, emphasizing their humanity and drawing parallels with Jesus not condemning sinners. Meanwhile, others, like @hesavictor231 and @ogoo_mariana, expressed concerns about potential confusion and questioned the Church’s stance on blessings versus approval.
The ongoing discussion reflects the complex intersection of religious teachings and societal attitudes toward same-sex relationships, showcasing the evolving dialogue within the Catholic Church on this contentious issue.
