Nigerian Polytechnic Abolishes Statements of Result, Introduces QR-Coded Certificates
Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, formerly known as Abia State Polytechnic, has announced the abolition of issuing statements of results and the sale of handouts, in a move aimed at modernizing academic processes and reducing student exploitation.
Rector Dr. Christopher Okoro explained that all examination results will now be uploaded online within six weeks of exams, eliminating the need for students to collect physical statements or approach lecturers for their results. The reform ensures that students can access their records promptly and securely.
In addition, the polytechnic has introduced digital certificates embedded with QR codes, allowing employers and other stakeholders to verify graduates’ credentials quickly and accurately. The QR-coded certificates are part of a broader effort to combat certificate fraud and enhance the credibility of the institution.
The polytechnic has also ended the sale of handouts, unofficial study materials previously sold by lecturers, ensuring that students are no longer financially burdened by additional learning materials beyond prescribed textbooks.
Addressing staff welfare, the institution has cleared 36 months of salary arrears. Academically, all 33 existing programs have received full accreditation from the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), while 17 new programs—including Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, Mechatronics Engineering, and Fashion Design Technology—have been approved.
Dr. Okoro acknowledged the support of Governor Alex Otti, stating that the government’s backing has been critical to the polytechnic’s transformation. He emphasized that these reforms position Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic as a forward-thinking institution committed to quality education and student welfare.
