Nigerian Nurses Set for Nationwide Strike Over Certificate Verification Dispute

The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has declared its intention to commence a nationwide strike in response to what it deems as stringent certificate verification guidelines imposed by the Nigeria and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN).

The decision was announced in a statement signed by Thomas A.O (RN) on behalf of the Naija Nurses Forum on Thursday, following the expiration of a 48-hour ultimatum given to the NMCN.

The nurses initiated a peaceful protest on Monday, February 12, 2024, at the NMCN head office in Abuja and Lagos, demanding a review of the verification guidelines, which they argue would impede their freedom to practice. The statement emphasized that the verification process should align with international standards, taking no longer than 48 hours, as observed in other countries.

Among their grievances, the nurses are also calling for the withdrawal of a new circular and the reopening of the verification portal without any conditions. Failing to meet these demands, the nurses have expressed their intent to embark on an industrial action.

The statement further highlights additional demands, including improved nurses’ welfare, increased hazard allowance, enhanced working conditions, and greater support for professional development opportunities.

The nurses criticize the NMCN registrar and other nursing leaders, citing unaccountability and irresponsibility for the suspension of the verification portal in December 2023. They also call for a review of the NMCN establishment act, advocating for the regulatory body’s independence from the Federal Ministry of Health.

Expressing solidarity with nurses in Oyo, Ondo, and Bayelsa states who are also protesting against perceived oppression, the statement concludes by warning of nationwide protests if the federal government fails to address their concerns.
