Nigerian Man Brutally Murdered in South Africa, Four Suspects Charged

The Nigerian Citizens Association in South Africa (NICASA) has condemned the alleged murder of a Nigerian man, Julius Chukwunta, by four South African nationals. The incident has sparked outrage within the Nigerian community in South Africa, as calls for justice intensify.

Chukwunta, 37, hailed from Aninri Local Government Area in Enugu State and was attacked on December 7, 2024, near his residence in Midrand Protea Estate. According to NICASA’s President-General, Dr. Frank Onyekwelu, the tragic event began when four men blocked Chukwunta’s vehicle as he approached his home.

Attempting to escape, Chukwunta sought refuge at the estate’s security office, but the attackers pursued and assaulted him, inflicting severe head injuries. His female companion, who witnessed the attack, desperately sought help from the estate’s security personnel, but no assistance was provided. Neither the security team nor residents contacted emergency services, according to Onyekwelu.

After an hour, Chukwunta’s companion contacted her father, who, along with family members, transported him to Tembisa General Hospital. Despite being placed on life support, Chukwunta succumbed to his injuries on December 10, 2024.

The incident was reported to Midrand Police Station and registered under file number 262/12/2024. Authorities arrested four suspects, aged 20, 24, 27, and 28, on December 13, 2024. The suspects were charged with murder and appeared at Alexandra Magistrate Court on December 18, 2024. Three of the suspects were granted bail of R10,000 each, while the fourth suspect had not applied for bail. The case was adjourned to February 3, 2025.

NICASA has expressed dissatisfaction with the court’s decision to grant bail, describing it as a disregard for the severity of the crime. Onyekwelu reaffirmed the association’s determination to ensure justice is served, saying, “The Nigerian community in South Africa is deeply aggrieved by this incident and the lack of urgency shown by authorities. We will not rest until justice is served and the dignity of Nigerian lives is upheld.”

The association has pledged ongoing support for Chukwunta’s family and urged authorities to ensure the perpetrators face the full weight of the law.
