Nigerian Businessman Arrested in South Africa for Alleged Possession of Precious Metals

South African authorities have arrested a Nigerian businessman, Benjamin Stanley Okwudili, for allegedly being in possession of precious metals worth an estimated R50 million. The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, known as the Hawks, apprehended Okwudili in Linbro Park, Sandton, following an intelligence-driven operation.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Lloyd Ramovha, Gauteng spokesperson for the Hawks, the Johannesburg Serious Organised Crime Investigation (SOCI) unit conducted the operation on February 27 after receiving critical information about the illegal storage of palladium at a residence on 1st Road, Linbro Park. Officers arrived at the property and identified Okwudili as the occupant. After introducing themselves, they requested permission to search the premises, which was granted.

While the initial search inside the house yielded no illegal items, investigators discovered a gold suitcase wrapped in clear cling wrap in the garage. Upon inspection, they found approximately 90 kg of silver stones suspected to be palladium, a valuable metal used in manufacturing electronics and industrial products. The Hawks reported that Okwudili claimed the suitcase had arrived from the Congo and was awaiting collection by a buyer. However, he failed to provide documentation authorising his possession of the minerals.

Following the discovery, the South African Police Service’s Local Criminal Record Centre was called to the scene for further processing. Okwudili, 55, was arrested and charged before being detained at Sandringham police station. He appeared before the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where the case was postponed to March 10 for verification of his immigration status in South Africa.

Gauteng provincial head of the Hawks, Major General Ebrahim Kadwa, welcomed the arrest, warning that authorities would take decisive action against individuals or entities violating the Precious Metals Act. He emphasised that adherence to the law is non-negotiable for those dealing in precious metals.
