Nigerian Bride Cancels Wedding Weeks to Ceremony Over Fiancé’s Refusal to Share Expenses

A Nigerian bride-to-be has canceled her wedding just three weeks before the scheduled ceremony after her fiancé allegedly refused to contribute financially to the event.

The revelation was made by a wedding accessories vendor, Osuchukwu Jane Ezeakolam, who shared the incident on her Facebook page. According to her, the bride had booked and paid in full for a wedding gown but failed to pick it up during the wedding week. Multiple attempts to reach her were unsuccessful as her phone line was switched off.

Jane disclosed that the woman eventually called a month later to explain that she had canceled the marriage because her fiancé declined to pay for any part of the wedding expenses. Each time she brought up the costs of food, drinks, or other items, he reportedly told her to cover them herself. Despite already making part payments for the hall, decorations, and cake, she decided to end the engagement when he showed no intention of meeting his responsibilities.

The vendor added that the groom-to-be had not visited the bride’s family as expected and remained silent even after she called off the wedding. Jane said she refunded the woman ₦80,000 for the gown deposit, noting that other vendors had refused to return her advance payments.

Offering advice to women preparing for marriage, Jane cautioned against financing their own weddings or contributing to bride price payments. She stressed the importance of balance in relationships, warning brides not to take on the entire financial burden, as it may later lead to ridicule or resentment.

She concluded by urging women to recognize when they are doing too much, reminding them that marriage preparations should be a shared responsibility.
