Nigerian Boxer Shot Dead by Neighbor in US
The death of a Nigerian boxer Isaiah Olugbemi has been reported in the US. Olugbemi, an emerging talent in the boxing world, was fatally shot multiple times by his neighbor, Nicholas Francis Xavier Giroux, 36, in Odenton, Maryland.
Giroux is charged with first-and-second-degree murder in the death of Olugbemi. A judge in Anne Arundel County has ordered that Giroux be held without bond pending trial. The preliminary hearing is scheduled to commence on July 17.
The incident occurred Monday night near Meadowmist Way and Stehlik Drive, where Olugbemi was found with multiple gunshot wounds. Despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries after being rushed to a Baltimore hospital.
Surveillance footage reviewed by detectives revealed that Giroux approached Olugbemi with a handgun, shot him multiple times, and then fled the scene on foot. Court documents indicate that Giroux confessed to the shooting on June 18.
Isaiah’s brother, Abraham Olugbemi, disclosed that Giroux had threatened Isaiah with a gun on at least two prior occasions this year, once in January and again in June. The fatal confrontation involved Giroux firing between six to 14 shots, pausing, and then firing at least three more times.
