Nigerian Army Retires 18 Generals
Eighteen senior officers of the Nigerian Army Corps of Supply and Transport have retired after completing 35 years of service.
The officers were formally honoured at a pulling-out parade held on Thursday in Benin City, marking the end of their military careers. The ceremony also concluded a three-day conference hosted in the Edo State capital.
The corps commander, Danjuma Shagaya, said the retirees included four major generals and 14 brigadier generals. He noted that they had served in various capacities from their commissioning through to retirement.
Shagaya described the event as both a recognition of service and a moment of reflection for the corps. He added that the presence of current and former corps commanders underscored the significance of the occasion.
He also explained that the pulling-out parade is a longstanding military tradition used to mark the end of active service, while acknowledging the contributions and sacrifices of personnel.
The commander commended the Chief of Army Staff for sending a representative to the ceremony in recognition of the retirees’ service.
Speaking on behalf of the retired officers, Olaniyi Dare said their careers spanned decades of operational, command, and administrative roles within the army.
Dare highlighted the role of the Corps of Supply and Transport in sustaining military operations, noting its involvement in training, peacekeeping missions, and internal security operations both within and outside Nigeria.
He described the ceremony as symbolic, offering an opportunity to reflect on years of service and commitment to national defence.
Dare also acknowledged the role of families, noting that the demands of military life often require extended absences and personal sacrifice, supported by the understanding and resilience of loved ones.
