Nigerian Army Retires 15 Generals Amidst Speculation Over COAS Health

In a significant shift within the Nigerian Army, 15 Generals have officially retired from service, coinciding with recent speculation regarding the health of Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja. The retirement ceremony was held on Saturday, October 19, 2024, at the Nigerian Army School of Artillery in Kachia, Kaduna State.

The retired officers include 11 Major Generals and four Brigadier Generals from the Artillery Corps, known for delivering vital firepower support to frontline troops.

During the event, Maj. Gen. James Myam (retd) addressed the audience on behalf of the retirees, reflecting on their military careers with gratitude and fulfillment. He credited their successes to divine grace and expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for the opportunity to serve. Myam also extended his best wishes to Lt. Gen. Lagbaja, hoping for continued strength and wisdom in his leadership role.

The announcement of the generals’ retirement comes amid swirling rumors about Lt. Gen. Lagbaja’s health. Reports emerged on Sunday, claiming that the Army chief had died from cancer. The Nigerian Army promptly dismissed these allegations as false, reaffirming that Lt. Gen. Lagbaja is critically ill but not deceased, currently receiving medical treatment abroad.

The Army called on the public to avoid spreading unfounded rumors and instead support the Chief of Army Staff during this challenging period. As the Nigerian Army undergoes this leadership transition with the retirement of these senior officers, the focus remains on stability and the well-being of its command structure amidst ongoing health concerns.
