“Nigeria Destroys Lives, and I Never, Ever Want That for the UK” – Kemi Badenoch

Kemi Badenoch, the leader of the UK’s Conservative Party, has warned that Britain could suffer the same fate as Nigeria if the country’s governance is not reformed. Speaking on Thursday at an event hosted by the think tank Onward, Badenoch emphasized the importance of building trust in government and positioned the Conservative Party as the solution to Britain’s challenges.

Reflecting on her personal experiences, Badenoch drew comparisons between the UK’s current situation and Nigeria’s economic struggles. “I know what it is like to have something and then to lose it,” she told the audience. “I grew up in a poor country and watched my relatively wealthy family become poorer and poorer, despite working harder and harder as their money disappeared with inflation. I came back to the UK aged 16 with my father’s last £100 in the hope of a better life.” She added, “I have lived with the consequences of terrible governments that destroy lives, and I never, ever want it to happen here.”

Badenoch’s remarks are the latest in a series of criticisms of Nigeria, her country of birth, which have drawn strong reactions from Nigerian leaders. Vice President Kashim Shettima accused her of “constantly denigrating” her homeland.

Before becoming Conservative leader, Badenoch had described Nigeria as a socialist state plagued by corruption and insecurity. She also recounted personal experiences with crime, including claims that Nigerian police had robbed her and stolen her brother’s shoes. Additionally, she has previously spoken about walking long distances to fetch water despite coming from a well-off family.

In response to the backlash, a spokesperson for Badenoch stated that she is not concerned with improving Nigeria’s image but remains focused on her political vision for the UK.
