Nigeria Anticipates $10 Billion Influx of Foreign Exchange in Coming Weeks

Nigeria is gearing up to welcome an estimated $10 billion in foreign currency inflows over the next few weeks. The announcement was made by Wale Edun, who serves as both the Minister of Finance and the Coordinating Minister of the Economy. He addressed this pressing issue during a panel session held at the ongoing Nigeria Economic Summit (NES) in Abuja on Monday.

Edun emphasized that the Nigerian government possesses a clear outlook regarding these anticipated inflows, emphasizing a relatively short time frame of weeks rather than months. He outlined various sources for this substantial foreign exchange inflow, including the supply of foreign exchange via the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), increased production, reduced expenditures, forward sales transactions, and discussions with sovereign wealth funds prepared to invest and provide advances alongside their investments.

Furthermore, he disclosed that President Bola Tinubu had taken critical steps to alleviate the liquidity crisis in the forex market. These measures include signing two executive orders that allow for the domestic issuance of instruments in foreign currency and the transfer of cash outside the banking system into banks.

President Tinubu, while addressing the NEC summit, assured that essential plans are in progress to enhance foreign exchange liquidity. He also affirmed his administration’s commitment to honoring every legitimate contract pertaining to the nation’s foreign exchange obligations.

Despite these positive developments, on the same day, the Nigerian naira experienced a fall to N1,225 per US dollar in the parallel section of the foreign exchange (FX) market, continuing its ongoing depreciation trend. The nation’s leaders remain dedicated to resolving these issues to stabilize the forex market and promote economic growth.
