New UK Visa Rules Ease Entry for Foreign Talent in Tech, Fashion, and More

The United Kingdom has expanded its Skilled Worker visa programme to welcome a wider range of international professionals, including fashion designers, technicians, and IT specialists, under new rules effective July 22, 2025. More than 70 mid-level occupations have been added to the list, with eligible roles now starting at salaries as low as €29,000.

This policy update is part of the UK government’s effort to address pressing labour shortages by loosening immigration barriers for sectors not traditionally covered under high-skilled visa categories. The revised visa structure introduces an expanded Temporary Shortage Occupation List (TSOL), offering lower salary thresholds and a simplified application process for qualifying positions in industries such as construction, healthcare, finance, engineering, science, creative arts, and technology.

The changes also differentiate salary thresholds based on an applicant’s background. While standard minimums remain for most new applicants, those classified as “new entrants,” PhD holders, or Skilled Worker visa holders with continuity dating before April 4, 2024, are eligible under reduced salary requirements. For example, a pipe fitter now qualifies with a salary of £40,400 instead of £46,000. Engineering technicians may enter at £34,700, down from £42,500. Fashion designers meet the requirement at £29,100, data analysts at £28,600, and laboratory technicians at £25,000—significantly lower than previous levels.

Officials say the changes reflect a strategic shift aimed at boosting economic resilience by filling essential workforce gaps. The goal is to make the UK more competitive globally while addressing shortages in practical, mid-level roles that support key sectors.

Applicants must still meet all standard visa conditions, including holding a confirmed job offer from a licensed UK sponsor, securing a Certificate of Sponsorship, and providing proof of qualifications and job alignment with official occupation codes.

Although the updated TSOL is being described as temporary, the government has not announced when—or if—it will be phased out.
