New Minimum Wage Details for Junior Federal Workers Ready
The National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission (NSIWC) has completed calculations for the new minimum wage for junior federal workers. The computation for senior cadre workers is expected within the next two to three weeks.
A source from the Presidency informed The Nation that these calculations will soon be submitted to the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF) for processing and implementation. This development awaits the conclusion of negotiations between the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Trade Union Congress (TUC), and the federal government to align workers’ remuneration with the new minimum wage through consequential adjustments.
Junior workers, defined as those on grade levels one to five, are set to benefit from the wage adjustment, with their minimum monthly salary increasing from ₦30,000 to ₦70,000. The computation aims to facilitate a smooth rollout of the new wage structure, providing much-needed relief to these workers.
An official from the OAGF highlighted the importance of these calculations in determining the federal government’s total wage bill under the new structure. The office is poised to assess the financial implications to ensure all federal employees receive their due compensation under the new law.
President Bola Tinubu’s administration has proactively addressed wage concerns, particularly in light of economic challenges and the rising cost of living. Following a meeting with NLC and TUC leaders on July 15, President Tinubu approved the new national minimum wage, subsequently ratified by the National Assembly. The new legislation mandates a review of the minimum wage every three years to align with inflation and economic conditions.
