New EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, Unveils His Vision for the Commission
The newly appointed Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has laid out his ambitious agenda for the anti-corruption agency following his confirmation by the Senate. His vision encompasses a strategic focus on the core mandate of the EFCC, a commitment to transparency and accountability, and a concerted effort to enhance Nigeria’s image on the global stage.
This transformative direction was unveiled as Olukoyede, alongside Mr. Muhammad Hammajoda, who was confirmed as the Secretary of the Commission, addressed the upper legislative chamber during a plenary session.
Olukoyede underscored three key areas that will drive his tenure. Firstly, he emphasized the imperative of concentrating on the EFCC’s legal mandate, as outlined in Section 6 of the EFCC Act, to advance economic development. Secondly, he stressed the importance of fostering an environment characterized by transparency and accountability. Lastly, he expressed his determination to bolster Nigeria’s international reputation.
To accomplish these goals, Olukoyede called for a unified commitment to combating corruption in Nigeria, recognizing it as a formidable obstacle to the nation’s development. He declared that to move forward, the nation must confront financial crimes and malfeasance head-on and with unwavering dedication.
The new EFCC Chairman also championed a shift towards a more preventive approach to addressing corruption, arguing that the enforcement of anti-corruption measures is vital. He stated that enforcement will be carried out with utmost seriousness.
Furthermore, Olukoyede highlighted the significance of a transactional credit system to intensify the fight against corruption. He argued that permitting the purchase of high-value items like houses and cars with cash hinders anti-corruption efforts, and stressed the need for a robust transactional credit system.
In a bid to enhance the effectiveness of anti-corruption initiatives, Olukoyede called for improvements in the criminal justice system. He urged for a swift and efficient adjudication process to ensure that maximum prosecution does not take longer than five years. He believes that a streamlined criminal justice system will magnify the impact of anti-corruption agencies and be in the best interest of the nation.
Ola Olukoyede’s vision for the EFCC holds the promise of a dynamic and proactive approach to combating corruption and financial crimes in Nigeria. His dedication to fostering transparency, accountability, and economic development reflects a commitment to ensuring a brighter future for the nation.
