Nenadi Usman-led Labour Party Caretaker Committee Reacts to Court Ruling Affirming Abure as National Chairman

The Labour Party’s Caretaker Committee, led by Senator Nenadi Usman, has declared its intention to appeal the recent court ruling that upheld Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the party. This decision follows a judgment by Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday, which recognized Abure’s leadership and instructed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to do the same.

The court also validated the March 2024 Nnewi convention, which saw the election of Abure and other national leaders. The ruling solidifies their position, mandating INEC to recognize the leadership structure produced at the convention.

In response to the court’s decision, Senator Usman issued a statement on Tuesday evening, via her X (formerly Twitter) account, confirming the party’s resolve to challenge the ruling. She revealed that the decision to appeal was reached after consultations with prominent party figures, including former presidential candidate Peter Obi, Abia State Governor Alex Otti, and Senator Darlington Nwokocha, who serves as Secretary of the Caretaker Committee.

“The case actually preceded the formation of the Caretaker Committee,” Usman noted, explaining that the committee, after being briefed on the details, decided to join the legal battle. She reassured party members of ongoing reconciliation efforts, urging them to remain calm and peaceful amid the legal dispute.
