NDLEA Busts International Drug Syndicates Concealing Meth, Opioids in Jeans, Buttons, Dolls, Others
In a major breakthrough, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has exposed a sophisticated drug smuggling operation attempting to export methamphetamine and opioids concealed in everyday items such as jeans, dolls, buttons, local soap, and even tins of Milo beverage. The drug syndicates targeted destinations in Europe, the United Arab Emirates, and Asia, but NDLEA operatives successfully intercepted multiple consignments at courier firms in Lagos.
Among the seized shipments were tramadol concealed in jeans hems bound for Cyprus, cannabis hidden in dolls en route to Dubai, UAE, sachets of tramadol buried in tins of Milo beverage destined for the UAE, and methamphetamine concealed in buttons heading to Hong Kong. The NDLEA’s vigilance also led to the interception of an illicit substance shipment from Florida, USA.
In a remarkable operation, NDLEA officers arrested a drug kingpin, Okechukwu Ogala, 56, at the Blue Moon Hotel in Okota, Lagos, seizing 60 wraps of methamphetamine. Further raids across Lagos resulted in the recovery of 8 tons of cannabis and the arrest of various suspects involved in drug trafficking.
The NDLEA’s operations extended beyond Lagos, with significant seizures in Edo, Anambra, Gombe, FCT, Kaduna, Kogi, Bauchi, and Delta states. Notably, the agency recovered nearly 6 tons of cannabis in the Ujiogba forest, Edo state, and seized a substantial quantity of tramadol capsules and cannabis blocks in various locations.
In a coordinated effort, NDLEA officers intercepted a vehicle along the Onitsha-Awka road, Anambra, seizing 120,000 capsules of tramadol concealed in new sound systems. The agency also recovered codeine syrup, cannabis, and other illicit substances in operations along Abuja-Kaduna road, Gombe-Bauchi road, and various locations in Kogi and Kaduna.
The NDLEA, under the leadership of Chairman/Chief Executive Officer Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd), commended its officers nationwide for their exceptional efforts in combating drug trafficking. The agency emphasized the dual focus on supply reduction and demand reduction through the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) advocacy campaign, reaching students across multiple states in the past week.
The successful operations underscore the agency’s commitment to dismantling complex drug networks and safeguarding communities from the devastating impact of illicit substances.
