NANS: ‘We Have Not Announced or Endorsed Any Protest Over Fuel Price Hike’
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has firmly denied any involvement in a rumored protest against the recent fuel price hike, distancing itself from reports suggesting a nationwide shutdown of major cities on September 15, 2024.
In a statement released on Wednesday, NANS Senate President NANS: ‘We Have Not Announced or Endorsed Any Protest Over Fuel Price Hike’emphasized that the association does not endorse any actions that could lead to civil unrest or disrupt public order. “We wish to categorically state that NANS has not announced or endorsed any such protest. These reports are entirely baseless and do not reflect the position or intentions of our organisation,” Akinteye said.
NANS, representing the interests of Nigerian students, reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful advocacy and constructive dialogue. The association stressed that it stands for peace, stability, and the unity of the nation, particularly in challenging times. Akinteye urged the public and the media to disregard the false reports, describing those spreading such rumors as “faceless entities” seeking to exploit NANS’ name for malicious purposes.
In response to these rumors, Akinteye called on security agencies to investigate the source of the misinformation and hold those responsible accountable. He warned that using NANS’ name to propagate unfounded claims poses a threat to national security and undermines the legitimate efforts of students who seek positive change.
Earlier reports had claimed that NANS planned to protest against the fuel price hike and demand the removal of the NNPC Director General, Mele Kyari. However, NANS leadership has disassociated itself from any such plans, indicating internal divisions within the organization may be responsible for the conflicting messages.
Despite the internal challenges, NANS continues to advocate for the rights and welfare of Nigerian students through peaceful and lawful means. The association called on its members and the public to remain vigilant and resist attempts to manipulate them for selfish gains.
NANS remains committed to constructive engagement with relevant stakeholders and upholding the integrity of Nigeria’s democratic processes.
