Naira Appreciation Fails to Curb Food Price Hike Amid Supply Chain Disruptions and High Transportation Costs

Despite the recent appreciation of the naira against the dollar at a rate of N1000, Nigerians are still struggling with soaring food prices, leading to further economic hardship for many.

While the stronger naira was expected to lower the cost of imported goods, including food, this has not materialized. Instead, prices for essential food items have continued to climb, worsening the financial strain on citizens.

According to vendors at Apata Market in Ibadan, the ongoing rise in food prices is due to a combination of factors including supply chain disruptions, increased transportation costs, and market speculation.

Mrs. Olufunmilayo, a market seller, reported a significant price increase in beans, which has gone from N68,000 to N80,000 in three weeks. Only rice prices have seen a reduction, falling from N88,000 to N70,000.

Ongoing insecurity in some regions has further compounded the issue, causing disruptions in agricultural activities and distribution networks.

Similarly, Mr. Abiodun reported a significant rise in the price of vegetable oil, from N46,000 for a 25-liter container to N57,000, despite the appreciation of the naira.

The price of garri, a staple food, has also increased dramatically. A congo of garri now costs N1,400, compared to N800 a month ago. A vendor noted, “This is devastating as a common man can no longer afford garri.”

Food prices have risen across the board since January, with substantial increases in beans, vegetable oil, noodles, and palm oil.

Lower-income families are particularly affected, with growing concerns about food insecurity and nutritional deficits.

The government faces increasing pressure to take swift action to alleviate these hardships for the masses.
