N200 Sachet Rice Hits Nigerian Markets as Bag Price Surpasses N90,000

In response to surging food costs, sachets of rice priced at N200 have been reintroduced to Nigerian markets, providing a more accessible option for households grappling with soaring food prices. The sachets, launched by indigenous rice producer Big Bull, aim to mitigate the impact of skyrocketing rice prices, with a 50kg bag now costing between N78,000 and N90,000, depending on brand and location.

This price hike places rice well beyond the reach of many Nigerians, even as the national minimum wage has recently increased to N70,000. However, many private and public institutions have yet to implement the new wage, leaving workers to contend with rising food costs on stagnant salaries.

The reintroduction of sachet rice comes amid rising inflation on essential foods, as reported by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). According to the NBS, a kilogram of brown beans was priced at N2,292.76 as of June 2024—a 252% increase from June 2023. Tomatoes have also seen dramatic price growth, with the cost per kilogram rising 320.67% year-on-year, while yam tubers jumped by 295.79% to N2,021.55 per kilogram.

The highest price for tomatoes was recorded in Abuja at N3,992.61 per kilogram, while Lagos led with the highest price for yam tubers at N3,376.54. In contrast, Gombe saw the highest price for garri at N1,619.27 per kilogram, highlighting regional disparities in food prices.
