“My Wife Gets Drunk, Beats Me, and Urinates in the House” – Husband Seeking Divorce Tells Court
A Grade A Customary Court in Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, has adjourned a divorce suit filed by a man, Sule, against his wife, Balikis, over allegations of drunkenness, domestic violence, and irresponsibility.
Sule told the court that he provided N50,000 for Balikis to start a business, but she squandered the money and failed to contribute to their home. He claimed she frequently got drunk, urinated all over their apartment, and became physically abusive whenever he confronted her. According to him, she would lock him inside their home and beat him, putting his life in danger. He sought a divorce, custody of their only child, and an order restricting her from threatening or interfering in his life.
Balikis did not oppose the divorce but accused Sule of starving her. She claimed he only gave her N200 per day for food while keeping food supplies locked in his room. She also alleged that he had a history of marrying multiple women and sending them away after a few years.
Sule countered by stating that their marriage was informal, with no traditional ceremony or bride price paid. He insisted that Balikis had disgraced him in their neighborhood due to her drinking habits and violent outbursts. He reiterated that he sought the court’s intervention for his safety and well-being.
After listening to both parties, the court president, Mrs. S.M., adjourned the case for judgment.
