Mrs. Tinubu Launches N1.8bn Economic Empowerment Programme for 37,000 Traders Nationwide
In a major boost to economic growth and support for local entrepreneurs, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, wife of the President, has launched the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) Economic Empowerment Programme. The initiative aims to disburse a substantial N1,850,000,000.00 to 37,000 women petty traders across Nigeria.
The programme, which commenced with a flag-off ceremony in Abuja, will see 1,000 women in each of the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) receive grants of N50,000 each. This effort is part of a broader strategy to empower small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and stimulate economic growth at the grassroots level.
Senator Tinubu, represented by Mrs. Adedayo Benjamin-Laniyi, Mandate Secretary of the Women Affairs Secretariat and FCT Coordinator of the Renewed Hope Initiative, highlighted the significance of the programme in addressing the challenges faced by petty traders. She emphasized the initiative’s goal of helping these traders overcome business obstacles, expand their enterprises, and contribute more effectively to the national economy.
“The grants provided today are aimed at helping women petty traders tackle business challenges, expand their operations, and create job opportunities,” Mrs. Tinubu stated. “Empowering women economically is crucial for the prosperity of their families, communities, and the nation.”
Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, FCT Minister of State, lauded the programme as a significant advancement in empowering women entrepreneurs and enhancing their economic resilience. Represented by Hajia Maijidda Adamu Musa, FCT Coordinator of the Social Investment Programme, Mahmoud expressed optimism that the grants would greatly aid women in growing their businesses and improving their livelihoods.
Additionally, the Mandate Secretary of the Women Affairs Secretariat, Mrs. Adedayo Benjamin-Laniyi, underscored the RHI’s role as a long-term interventionist programme dedicated to supporting women entrepreneurs. Alhaji Kolawole Adetoyi Rabiu, Permanent Secretary of the Women Affairs Secretariat, reiterated the commitment to revitalizing programmes that enhance women’s economic opportunities.
