Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria rejects terror allegations, seeks US engagement
The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has denied allegations linking it to terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and cattle rustling, following a proposal by lawmakers in the United States Congress to sanction individuals and groups over religious freedom concerns in Nigeria.
The proposed US measure recommends visa restrictions and asset freezes against those deemed responsible for severe violations of religious freedom. Those named include Rabiu Kwankwaso, MACBAN, Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore and groups described as Fulani ethnic nomad militias operating in Nigeria.
Addressing a press conference on Sunday, MACBAN National President Baba Ngelzarma said the association recognises the right of the United States to deliberate on human rights and religious freedom issues but objected to what he described as attempts to associate the body with terrorism.
He said MACBAN is a legally registered organisation established in 1986 under Nigerian law, with national, state and local structures. According to him, its executives are elected every four years and the association operates openly across the country.
Ngelzarma said the group is recognised by federal and state authorities as a stakeholder in livestock development, pastoral welfare and conflict mediation. He added that its members play a significant role in Nigeria’s protein supply chain and rural economy.
He warned that international sanctions against recognised organisations could lead to economic losses, disrupt trade and further marginalise pastoral communities.
The MACBAN president also said pastoralists have been targets of violence by armed groups, citing attacks on communities, cattle rustling and the killing of association leaders. He stated that at least eight state leaders of the association were killed in 2025.
Ngelzarma called on Nigeria’s Senate committees on foreign affairs and national security and intelligence to adopt a resolution addressing what he described as a mischaracterisation of the association. He also urged the use of parliamentary diplomacy to engage the US Congress and ensure that bilateral counterterrorism cooperation is based on verified information and established legal processes.
