Minimum Wage Talks: Federal Government and Labour Leaders Reach Another Deadlock
The minimum wage tripartite committee meeting ended inconclusively as the federal government has yet to present its proposed template, just twenty-four hours after organized labour suspended their strike to resume negotiations.
Trade Union Congress President, Festus Osifo, and Minister of State for Labour, Nkeiru Onyejeocha, confirmed to AIT Live that the talks remain at an impasse.
Labour representatives revealed that the government has not proposed any figure higher than N60,000. The government asserts it is developing a template that will satisfy both organized labour and the private sector.
Addressing concerns that some states are hindering the agreement on a new minimum wage, with several still not implementing the N30,000 minimum wage, the Minister of Labour offered explanations.
The meeting, held on June 5, included the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, Kwara State Governor, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, and the Head of the Federal Civil Service, Folasade Yemi-Esan.
