Military Plane Carrying Malawi’s Vice President Missing, Search Underway
A military aircraft carrying Malawi’s Vice President, Saulos Klaus Chilima, has gone missing after it failed to land on Monday morning, the government announced. The plane, which departed shortly after 9:00 am local time (0700 GMT), was carrying 51-year-old Chilima and nine other passengers.
Government officials have stated that all attempts to contact the aircraft since it went off radar have been unsuccessful.
President Lazarus Chakwera has ordered immediate search and rescue operations by regional and national forces to locate the missing plane. As a result, Chakwera has cancelled his planned working visit to the Bahamas.
In 2022, Chilima was stripped of his official powers following his arrest on corruption charges involving a British-Malawian businessman. These charges were dropped by a Malawian court last month after several court appearances by Chilima.
