Midnight Explosion Rocks Imo Community, Newly Built Home Reduced to Rubble

An overnight bomb explosion shook the Umuneke community in Mbieri, Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State, leaving residents in shock and reducing a newly completed family house to rubble.

The incident, which occurred late Saturday night, caused no casualties but left the community in fear. Eyewitnesses described the explosion as deafening, with some initially mistaking it for an attack.

A local resident, Iyke Njoku, recounted, “The sound was massive, followed by a loud bang. After waiting and hearing no screams or movement, we decided to check. To our shock, the house was completely destroyed. Neighbours from nearby villages also called, asking about the noise, which shows how far-reaching the blast was.”

The destroyed bungalow was newly completed by a couple who had planned to move in by February. “It’s heartbreaking,” Njoku added. “Their hard work has been reduced to rubble, and they won’t be able to move in as planned.”

Another resident, Emma Emeka, shared his experience: “The explosion jolted us awake. We rushed out to see the damage but couldn’t determine what caused it or who was behind it. Everyone was terrified, and we barely slept that night out of fear of a possible attack.”

The blast’s impact was felt across neighbouring communities, leaving many residents unsettled. Efforts to obtain a statement from the Imo State Police spokesperson, DSP Henry Okoye, were unsuccessful as his phone was unreachable.
