A final year student of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State, has tragically passed away after collapsing during a football game on campus. The student, identified as Nwachukwu Omiko from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, reportedly slumped while playing with colleagues.
According to a statement released on Wednesday, May 15, by the university’s Chief Public Relations Officer, Ubadire Agua, efforts were made by fellow students to revive him on the pitch before he was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia. He was transported in the university’s oxygen-equipped ambulance, but sadly, all efforts to save his life proved unsuccessful.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Maduebibisi Iwe, extended heartfelt condolences to Omiko’s family, friends, and the entire College of Engineering and Engineering Technology, expressing the university’s deep sorrow over the loss.
In response to the incident, the university urged students to prioritize their health by undergoing regular medical checks and avoiding strenuous activities, especially if they have underlying health conditions.
