A man, Chidube Onyema, has been reported to have allegedly shot dead his girlfriend, identified as Chinwendu, after suspecting that she was cheating on him.
The incident, happened at Umuokirie village in the Okuku autonomous community of the Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State.
Chinwendu was reported to have visited Chidube from her village, Ohabele in the Obosima community, Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of the state, after returning from Aba, Abia State.
She had received a phone call in her lover’s presence, and he had asked to know who was calling her, she kept mute and he consequently requested for the phone, which she refused to release.
An eye witness said, “Chidube who is a hunter, pulled out his gun and demanded for the phone, but the lady refused. They started dragging the phone and unfortunately, the trigger pulled and the bullet pierced through the lady’s private parts.”
The source further said “She was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, where she died about three hours later.”
The victim’s brothers came from Obosima on reprisal and allegedly burnt the suspect’s parents’ house.
The President-General, Okuku Autonomous Community, Martin Daniel, who confirmed the incident said the community was working with the police to restore peace.
He stated that the suspect has been arrested and his gun recovered and the matter has been transferred to the State Criminal and Investigation Department in Owerri.
The police spokesman in the state, Orlando Ikeokwu, also confirmed that Chidube had been arrested and the case transferred to the state CID in Owerri.
