Major Reshuffling in Nigerian Army Following Death of Lt.-Gen. Lagbaja

The sudden passing of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, has sparked an imminent major redeployment within the Nigerian Army. Sources close to the government revealed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to appoint the newly promoted Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede as the substantive Chief of Army Staff, pending Senate confirmation. This move is expected to lead to a reshuffling of key generals within the military.

Military sources, who requested anonymity as the country remains in mourning, stated that while the death of Lt.-Gen. Lagbaja marks a significant loss, no officers from the 39th Regular Course (RC) will be forced into retirement. However, several of Oluyede’s contemporaries may be redeployed to new positions within the Defence Headquarters or other service institutions. This is seen as part of efforts to ensure continuity in military operations following the sudden vacancy in the top army position.

A National Loss and Tributes Pour In

Following the death of Lt.-Gen. Lagbaja, which occurred on the evening of November 5 in Lagos after a brief illness, there has been an outpouring of tributes from across the country. The President ordered the indefinite postponement of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting scheduled for Wednesday to honor the late army chief. Vice President Kashim Shettima, who led a minute of silence in memory of Lagbaja at the start of the meeting, expressed deep sadness over the loss.

In an official statement, President Tinubu extended his condolences to the Lagbaja family and the Nigerian Armed Forces, describing his death as a great loss to the nation. Lt.-Gen. Lagbaja, survived by his wife, Mariya, and two children, was praised for his outstanding contributions to national security and military excellence.

Political Leaders and Military Figures Pay Their Respects

Key figures in the Nigerian government, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House of Representatives Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, and several state governors, also mourned the late general. The Northern States Governors’ Forum, led by Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, and other prominent officials expressed their sorrow, remembering Lagbaja’s dedication and leadership during his tenure.

Former President Muhammadu Buhari, in his tribute, described Lagbaja as one of the finest officers Nigeria had ever known, highlighting his role in critical security operations across the country. Minister of Defence, Muhammad Badaru, and Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, also conveyed their condolences, emphasizing the loss to both the military and the nation.

Legacy and Final Honors

President Tinubu has ordered national flags to be flown at half-mast for seven days in honor of Lt.-Gen. Lagbaja’s contributions to Nigeria’s security. The Acting Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Oluyede, praised Lagbaja’s selflessness and leadership, particularly in addressing the country’s security challenges.

In addition to government officials, the wife of the President, Oluremi Tinubu, visited the residence of the late army chief in Niger Barracks, where she, accompanied by other dignitaries, offered condolences to the grieving family.
